Croydon Metropolitan Centre (CMC) is set for major transformation. Previous visionary work for 'Vision 2020' and 'Third City' has set the ambition to transform the CMC into a place that is fit for living, working and visiting in the 21st century. Now the Council is working together with the public and stakeholders on a series of masterplans to ensure change is delivered on the ground.
The Mid Croydon area is vital to the success of all the masterplans, and the regeneration plans for Croydon as a whole. The eight hectare area sits at the heart of the Metropolitan Centre, between the main shopping area to the north, the Old Town to the west, the fringe of the Metropolitan Centre across the flyover to the south and Croydon College and Fairfield Halls to the east.
Despite containing very special elements such as the Town Hall, the Clocktower, the Queen's Gardens, the headquarters of Nestle UK and the listed art deco Gas Board Building, the area suffers from poor quality public realm and the legacy of the unsuccessful 1960s St George's Walk shopping precinct.
Croydon Council has plans for new Council Offices - the Public Service Delivery Hub - to be delivered through the CCURV Urban Regeneration Vehicle. The area's significant development sites, history and built heritage, public realm, existing cultural and civic facilities and adjacencies to other major regeneration projects offer exciting opportunities for further change. In this context, a Mid-Croydon Masterplan Stakeholders Steering Group has been set up to work together to help develop a masterplan for the area
