This project's overarching objective is to transform Wandle Park from a well-loved but rundown urban park into a multi-use, high quality green and blue space.
The centrepiece of the scheme is the restoration of the River Wandle - a tributary of the River Thames - currently buried underneath the park. The design also includes an adjoining lake. Several of the original Victorian features will be restored to their former glory, existing facilities will be enhanced and new facilities added to cater for the contemporary needs of the park's community.
Wandle Park opened in 1889 and is 8.5 hectares in size. It is situated only ten minutes walk from Croydon's busy retail and business centre and thousands of people live and work close by. Demands on the park are set to increase soon with the opening of a large residential development adjoining the park.
