Wellesley Road and Park Lane will be completely redesigned to form an integral part of the improved network of public spaces in central Croydon.

Wellesley Road currently splits the heart of the town centre into two. Removing this physical barrier and redesigning the urban space will bring huge benefits to the area and will help to attract new investment and a wider range of uses. The old transportation corridor will become a rich and varied metropolitan street. The improved pedestrian connections between major rail and bus stations, retail areas, office and cultural facilities will transform and unite the centre of Croydon.

This challenging project requires a forward looking, world class design so the council invited international design teams to submit their ideas for the area. Following months of world-wide interest and intense competition, Netherlands based OKRA Landscape have been awarded the contract to transform Wellesley Road and Park Lane into an outstanding public space.

Will Alsop said of the OKRA proposal, "It will transform the Wellesley Road into a usable place where people will feel comfortable to dwell and relax. The project will also go a long way to restore the East West links through the centre of Croydon. This is just the type of catalyst that is required at this time."
