Wellesley Road currently splits the metropolitan centre in two. Removing this physical barrier and redesigning the urban space will bring huge benefits to the area and will help to attract new investment and a wider range of uses. The old transportation corridor will become a rich and varied metropolitan street. The improved pedestrian connections between major rail and bus stations, retail areas, office and cultural facilities will transform and unite the centre of Croydon.

This challenging project requires a forward looking, world class design so the council invited international design teams to submit their ideas for the area. Following months of world-wide interest and intense competition, Netherlands based OKRA Landscape have been awarded the contract to transform Wellesley Road and Park Lane into an outstanding public space.

Wellesley Road and Park Lane will be completely redesigned to form an integral part of the improved network of public spaces in central Croydon.
